Social Media, is certainly changing the way many business operate, even here in Nova Scotia. Since relocating here in 2007, we have heard many business owners talk about the struggles of operating in Nova Scotia, especially rural Nova Scotia.
More than once, we have heard people say that "things move slower here", "we are always in a recession", "people are different here".
But is this the case? Well we agree the pace of life is slower here (one of the many reasons we love it so much) and yes, because people are different, friendly more relaxed than some of the more built up parts of Canada.
The question is, does this make the new social media wave more or less important/effective?
In our minds it only strengthens the value of these new tools, small businesses with small budgets now have voice that be heard around the world.
One of the unique things that we have noticed is that often these small companies in an out the way corner of the province have a really unique or amazing story to tell, that could really benefit the rest of the world.
For example 2 such businesses we like are"
Kearns Waste Sciences Group, in North Sydney
Neptunes Balance, Digby County
Both of these companies produce products that have great stories, and great enviromental benefits.
Its these kind of stories that makes Nova Scotia unique, and as such makes social media so powerful not only for individual businesses but the province as a whole.
A quick browse on facebook and you will see more and more adverts for local businesses, youtube hosts many videos now not only from our business owners but also our tourist boards. Take a look at these produced last year for the Yarmouth area.
